Conservation Success Story Fact Sheet

Conservation_Success

Have you ever wondered why floating or fishing the canyon stretch of the South Fork Snake River is such a scenic experience, filled with sightings of eagles and moose instead of cliff top mansions?  For over 10 years, the Teton Regional Land Trust, The Conservation Fund, The Nature Conservancy, and the Bureau of Land Management have bought conservation easements from private landowners who want to protect their land.  These landowners still own their land.  They still ranch, farm, hunt and enjoy their peropty.  But, with the exception of building a house or two they'be given up their rights - forever- to develop their land.

This nationally recognized land conservation project has protected approximately 61 privately owned properties through purchases of 20,000 acres (8,212 acres of fee and 12,154 acres of conservation easements) along the South Fork, Henrys Fork, and Main Snake Rivers in southeastern Idaho’s Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. These conservation purchases have augmented 22,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Forest Service and State of Idaho administered river lands. The ACEC supports multiple listed species, the most unique and bio-diverse ecosystem in Idaho, and an active water-based recreation program. Click here to read the fact sheet.
