Thanks to all our wonderful volunteers who helped take down dilapidated fencing material along the Teton River.

Resource Specialist, Mari Castello led 15 volunteers on October 1st to remove fencing along a conservation easement. Rundown fencing can be a large threat to moving wildlife. Volunteers worked all day to remove over a half mile of old wire and posts clearing a path for more wildlife friendly fencing that will be replaced later this year.

Thank you volunteers, we couldn’t have done it without you!

Celebrating on the South Fork

Teton Regional Land Trust hosted a special event for Conservators’ Circle members last Friday to celebrate South Fork land protection projects.

20 Conservator’s Circle members floated with TRLT staff down the Canyon Stretch of the South Fork. The group learned about natural resources along the river as well as the conservation work that has protected the iconic river.

After the float, the group gathered at Natural Retreats Snake River (formerly the South Fork Lodge) for a celebration of conservation and thanks for Conservators’ Circle member support.

Geology Tour of Teton Valley Area with Robert Spoelhof

This exciting driving and walking tour will integrate Teton Valley geology with Western U.S. Geological events through several stops.

The first stop will be at Pine Creek Pass to observe strongly tilted sedimentary rocks and discuss the origin and later telescoping and shortening of the rocks in the west.

The second stop will be along Teton Pass to observe strongly deformed rocks related to the Teton uplift as well as younger Yellowstone volcanic eruptions.

The third optional stop at Bates will be to observe and discuss the economic geology of Teton Valley.  We will focus on oil and gas, coal, groundwater, farmland and building materials.

Tour leader, Robert Spoelhof, holds a PhD and Masters in Geology from the Colorado School of Mines, 1974.  He worked for 27 years in the oil and gas industry for Shell Research, Shell Oil and Penzoil.  For the past decade, he has worked as an interpretive park ranger in Yellowstone National Park and Death Valley during the summer and winter and has taught at Calvin College.  Robert’s forte is in explaining geology to all levels and interpreting local geology in a broad context.

Participants will meet at the Teton Regional Land Trust office, 1520 South 500 West at 10am.  The office is 1.5 miles south of Driggs next to a big red schoolhouse on Highway 33.  Please wear bright colored field clothes since we will be walking near the highway and bring lunch and water.  The tour will last for 2 or 3 hours.

The event is free and membership to Teton Regional Land Trust is encouraged.  Please call 208-354-8939 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to sign up and get more information.
